Ardennes Air Race Missions for Online Competition

I was intrigued by Caveman's idea in the Forum about a Reno Air Race style mission. After reading up on the layout of the real Reno Air Race I came to the conclusion that a flat layout would not lend itself well to WW2F. Just flying around a flat circuit would be quite boring. A better challenge would be to include some hills to negotiate thus pilots would need to manage their energy better in order to win. With this in mind I chose Bonn as the location due to the local terrain.

Since WW2F will not check on the location of non-host pilots I had to come up with a way to prevent any cutting of corners. To do this instead of pylons marking out the course I used Jeeps. By destroying each Jeep in sequence from start to finish the possibility of cutting corners is negated.

Also the start must be fair. Due to lag, especially at the start of a mission, my initial idea of starting on the ground and taking off to start the race was very difficult to implement. The solution I eventually settled on was a merge to signal the start of the race. Each pilot starts out facing the other but flying at right angles to the start of the course. Ony after the merge will they turn toward the start thus making as fair a start as possible.

Finally after completing the race if any pilot missed the winning text I wanted a way to display the results that would be permanent. To do this I settled on awakening a plane on the airfield at the end of the race that would be named for the winner. That way in a "photo finish" there will always be a way to determine the winner.

To use these missions place them in your C:\Program Files\Jane's Combat Simulations\WWII Fighters\Data\missions folder.

 Good Luck,
